Negotiations between between Disney and the Chinese government over construction of a new park in Shanghai may soon be finalized. The deal, now two decades in the making, is expected to provide an economic boon for the region by creating new jobs and increasing land value for those currently residing in the expected construction area.

Many in Shanghai expect the new park to be built near Zhaohang village in the eastern fringes of Shanghai. Residents of the area have been seeking to sell their property when and if negotiations are successful. Others have been purchasing stock in companies whose land currently rests within the borders of the expected construction site.

Aside from the local economic impact building a new Disney park would bring, others are speculating that the park could give Disney a footing in Shanghai to begin a big media push. As the Chinese government staunchly limits the foreign films that are imported into the country, television may be the best outlet for Disney in the region. This could lead to a greater cultural impact and increased guest and merchandizing revenue.
