Six Flags Magic Mountain is now planning to add flamethrower effects to its X2 coaster, along with previously announced fog and sound effects, according to a LA Times report. This news comes after the recent cancellation of plans for fly-through tunnels to be added to the 360-degree rotating coaster as part of its $10-million rehab. The same pyrotechnics experts responsible for Universal Studios Hollywood's Backdraft attraction will work on X2's effects, which will shoot from both sides of the track along one of the main drops. Ride computers will instantly shut off the flamethrowers should wind gusts exceed specified speeds, and the effects must also meet industry standards for maximum fire temperature and minimum distance between rider and flame. Screamscape had recently posted pictures of flame effects testing on the ride, leading to speculation that an official announcement would be made soon. The new X2 will reopen on May 24.
