The Calico Ghost Town area of Knott's Berry Farm may be headed for the big screen, according to a Variety report. Allentown Productions, headed by documentary filmmaker James Moll, has acquired the features rights to all rides, original characters, and the ghost town itself. Located in the Mojave Desert, the real Calico had a population of 1,200 and more than 500 silver mines at its peak, but was abandoned in 1907 and was one time owned by Knott's. The film will be set in the Wild West at the turn of the century, with a story centering on Calico, which has been overrun by ghosts and other foul-natured supernatural creatures. Allentown director of development Chris W. King is credited with creating the concept, along with Moll, who will produce the film. "It's the perfect setting for a big, spooky, family adventure with all the elements of a classic Western -- cowboys, showgirls, gunfights, chases through creepy mines -- all with a supernatural twist, " Moll said. Additional financing and a final writer and director are expected to be announced later this summer. [via LA Times]
