Wild Rivers Waterpark to close at end of season

After 25 years of operation, Wild Rivers Waterpark in Irvine, CA will be closing for good October 2nd due to its lease not being extended. The Irvine Company, which owns the property, declined to renew it's lease when it ended in 2007. The land will now be used to build 1,700 apartment homes. The park would already have closed had it not been for community uproar and a request by the mayor to grant more time for the waterpark to find a new location.
Spokeswoman for the Irvine Co. Erin Freeman said, "The Irvine Co. has always been up front about our future plans. This parcel of land was always meant to transition to a more a permanent use. We wish Wild Rivers continued success and hope they find a suitable place to relocate."
The President for Wild Rivers, Mike Riedel says that the water park has been working to secure a site at or around the Orange County Great Park but says it is a slow process.
